Welcome to this e-learning about diagnosing precursor lesions of high-grade serous cancer.

Who is this e-learning for?
This e-learning is designed for pathologists and pathologists in training and concerns pelvic high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC) and its precursor lesions. This e-learning focuses on diagnosing and differentiating between the several putative precursors of HGSC and related lesions including serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC), serous tubal intraepithelial lesion (STIL), and p53 signature. It contains examples which can be viewed in a ‘real-life’ setting using digitalized whole slide images. At the end of this e-learning, you can examine your knowledge with a ‘‘test yourself’’.

Why is this e-learning developed?
This e-learning is developed in the light of the TUBA-WISP II study (NCT04294927). This is a prospective, international study initiated by dr. J. de Hullu and prof. dr. R. Hermens (Radboud university medical center, Nijmegen, the Netherlands) in close collaboration with prof. dr. K. Lu (MD Anderson, Texas, USA) and prof. dr. E. Swisher (UW Medicine, Washington, USA). The TUBA-WISP II study is investigating the safety of salpingectomy with delayed oophorectomy as alternative for risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy among women with a high inherited risk of ovarian cancer. In this trial, the oophorectomy is delayed by five years beyond the current guideline age if the pathology of the salpingectomy shows no sign of a serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma. As the safety of this trial is depending on reliable diagnosis or exclusion of STIC, this e-learning is developed to provide pathologists with information about STIC diagnosis that is required for participation in the TUBA-WISP II study. Both this e-learning and the study are financially supported by the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF, Grant KUN2021-13228).

Learning objectives
  • To specify the various (pre)malignant lesions in the fallopian tubes
  • To differentiate between these lesions 
  • To use and interpret immunohistochemical stains to diagnose (pre)malignant lesions in the fallopian tubes
  • To apply the knowledge from this e-learning in test cases
Structure of the e-learning
The first part of the e-learning will focus on background information. Then, we will introduce the grossing protocols for fallopian tubes. Finally, we will discuss the macroscopy. Thereby the e-learning starts with the extremes of the spectrum (normal epithelium and high-grade serous carcinoma) and subsequently disucces the various precursor lesions that can be distinguished.
